Fashion icon? China

Have you seen those Tik-Toks in which normal Chinese citizens walk around looking like absolutely gorgeous models? Well, in this article, we're gonna talk about the different elements that go into this melting pot of fashion creativity.

A little bit of history…

Clothes and types of clothing in China were first used to establish your status in society. The length of the skirt, the number of ornaments worn, and even the wideness of the sleeve depicted where you stood in the Western Zhou dynasty. On top of the clothes, a hat for men or a hairpiece for women used to be worn, which often told the profession and social status of the person. Only high-ranking officials in the king’s court were allowed to wear silk, and lower-ranking people could even be punished if they wore silk clothes. Only the emperor was allowed to wear yellow, and in the Sui dynasty, poor people were allowed to only wear black or blue clothing.

The evolution of Chinese clothing through the years

Modern-day fashion:

In certain parts of Beijing, high fashion is so pervasive that it feels like a constant fashion week. The main reason why this has captivated so many people is due to the flexibility. They don’t just adopt an entire fashion trend; they seem to incorporate different styles originating from all over the world to create outfits that look out of this world. There are always different elements at work and seem to appeal to a wide group of people.

Different styles depicted

Pastel goth elements:

Pastel goth is precisely what it sounds like. You take the goth theme, switch out the dark colours with pastel ones, and you’ve got it! It gives people more of a ‘cute-creepy’ vibe, something that is widely sought out. It’s an upcoming sort of dressing style, and quite frankly, looks amazing. You will usually spot them wearing pastel wigs and tops, with a usually darker skirt/pants. A lot of them wear black net stockings as well.

Hip-hop elements:

Sportswear being worn as casual wear

A lot of the street fashion has hip-hop styles incorporated into them. In detail, the 70s African American style that had blown up in the American fashion industry. Denim, bucket hats, oversized clothes, sportswear as casual wear, sneaker, chains, intricate braids, and a lot more is what defines this style. The best part about this style is that it seems to create its own rules instead of following the main trends set by the fashion industry, including mixing luxury fashion pieces with more casual wear.

Traditional elements:

Just because there is a lot of western influence in the present-day Chinese fashion industry and their trends, it does not mean that they have forgotten their roots! This part of their style is most unique to China; it has not been influenced by the outside world (and let’s be honest here, they all look absolutely amazing!). A lot of people even incorporate their traditional clothing with more modern styles. They add slits, fur, lace, and other accessories to make the clothing modern and appealing.

The traditional Chinese style

Author’s final words:

The Chinese Street fashion is known for not sticking to the top trends, so as to be creative and not ‘normal-looking’. They have a little bit for everyone, and that’s what makes it special. They exude confidence and originality, all while managing to stick to their roots. And, let’s be honest, it’s a beautiful sight!
